Feb 05, 2010 - Fort DeSoto Park & St. Pete

Egrets at Fort DeSoto SP

Went to the office this AM to use the internet, but it seemed to be having problems. While I was reconnecting and restarting and rebooting, trying to get my email, I was eavesdropping on the folks that came in to talk to the rangers. The typical conversation starter was something about the nasty snowstorm that’s moving through up north today, usually ending with the words "ha, ha." But, it’s supposed to rain like crazy here today, with 40 MPH winds later this afternoon, ending sometime overnight. So we’re suffering too. No, not really.

I haven’t gotten many photos of the park yet, because except for the time we spent on the beach, the sky’s been gray and not very photogenic. However, we decided to take a walk around the park today before the rains came, and although no award winners, I was able to get a few photos for the benefit of those rPod folks who might be interested in coming here in the future. Right now the trees have a lot of dead stuff in them, but the rangers say come springtime it’s a full time job just hacking back the jungle so it doesn’t swallow the park. Really, I don’t think there’s a bad spot in the park, and it’s still plenty nice this time of year. At least it’s not snowing, ha, ha. Sorry, that just slipped out.

We returned to our campsite and took the rDome down while it was still dry. If we get some high winds tonight we’ll be all buttoned down. After that, we threw some lunch stuff in a cooler and headed for the Arrowhead Picnic Area just beyond the fort, with plans to grab a sandwich among the palms, then walk the nature trail before it rains. No such luck. Shortly after we got there, it started to sprinkle, and we had to finish our sandwiches in the truck. Then it really started to rain. And did the wind ever blow. So since we were so smart and had the camp all secured already, we decided to drive on into St. Pete to see what’s there.

There was an empty parking spot right in front of Starbuck’s, so we whipped in and got ourselves a cup of Black Extrastrong while we did all the online stuff we weren’t able to do this AM. Then the rain got serious; I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it come down that hard ever in my life. It cascaded from canopies, it poured from pipes, and it shot from sluices. The noise was so loud you absolutely could not hear the hip acoustic/jazz/blues background music. Several pedestrians came stumbling through the doors, dripping profusely and looking a bit dazed, then whipped out their cell phones to call someone or another to say that due to the monsoon they’d be late for this or that.

Returned to camp, still raining. Not great BBQ weather. Looks like we’ll get a chance to try out the little convection oven tonight.
