Feb 10, 2010 - Captiva Island

Dinner under the dome. L-R: Floyd, Sue, Beth, Mark

Took a drive over to Captiva today, intending to drive through the Ding Darling Wildlife Preserve and make reservations for a boat excursion tomorrow. We got a bit of a late start to begin with, but the traffic on Captiva was almost gridlock, and by the time we drove across the island to check things out, made our reservations, and had lunch at the Island Cow, it was time to head back to camp. The weatherman says it’s going to get chilly really fast tonight, and we still have to go back and grill our Yellowtail Snapper! Mayday, mayday!

By the time we got back and got started, it was in the lower 50s, and dropping fast. It’s supposed to be 38 degrees when we wake up tomorrow AM. Nobody really wanted to eat inside, because, well, this is Florida! We dragged the ¾ scale picnic table on our site inside the rDome, stuck an electric heater out there, and had our dinner under the tent by the light of two candles and a string of retro camper lights strung from the center roof ridgepole. Afterwards we built a campfire and sat around it for warmth. I got to use the PyroClaw.

Yes, this is Florida
The PyroClaw is a mechanical grabber on the end of a 4 foot handle, meant for handling flaming logs. I was introduced to this ultimate man tool at a family campout recently. As soon as I saw "The Claw", I threw the puny little fireplace poker I'd been using underneath the trailer in disgust and ordered one of these babies. I did not realize how serious a tool it was until I actually received it, and read the attached hang tag. See the highlighted lines below:

They must have good lawyers at the Pyro Claw company.
