Feb 07, 2010 - Fort Myers

Seminole Campground
Took a bike ride around the park this AM. The people that own it bought it about 3 years ago, and it looks like they’ve made quite a few improvements since then. The heated pool has new cement work all around it, and many of the RV pads look new too. The laundry room is very nice, with lots of machines. The bathrooms and showers have what seems to be new tile work. Beth loves her shower because it has a sunflower showerhead about a foot and a half in diameter, plus a regular showerhead too. There’s a creek that runs through the back of the park. The undergrowth along the creek is kept trimmed back so you can walk along it. Unfortunately the park is only about half full. That was also true at Fort DeSoto. Even though the rangers there said they were booked up on the weekends, during the week when we were there, there were lots of empty spots. I’ll get some more photos of this park and surrounding area in the next few days.

Our friend Sue heard on the local morning news that there was an art fair going on in Fort Myers, so off we went. By the time we got there the sun had come out, and we actually took our jackets off mid-afternoon! After the last few gray days, today was nice because there wasn’t a cloud in the sky anywhere. There were some very unique art works there, and artists from all around the country. There were sculptures made out of wire mesh, hand blown glass, wall art made from small mosaic tiles and broken pottery, watercolors, oils, photography, driftwood sculpture, ceramics, you name it. One artist had a display of gigantic welded sculptures that would go great in your average 6,000 square foot house, or maybe a city park. We saw several much smaller things that would go great in our house, which is considerably less than 6,000 square feet, but with prices around $1K or higher, we passed.

Even though the temperature was a bit cool for sitting on the beach, it was just right for walking around the art fair. According to the local weather, it’s actually warmer here than it is down in the keys, and will be for the next week or so. When we left, our friends put the top down on their convertible, because, well, we’re in Florida! We ended up at Bunche Beach, between Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach. It’s popular with locals because it’s non-commercial, no souvenir stands (or restrooms) and not closely watched. A good place to relax without big crowds.

Later that night Floyd and I went to the community room Super Bowl party and watched in amazement as New Orleans turned it around for the win.
